Over the years Chester has competed at the highest levels, including a fabled visit to the Albert Hall (see photo right).
The band then had a quieter, up-and-down, period in contesting, dropping to the 4th section in 1999, promotion back to the 3rd section in 2002, and back to the 4th section for 2010.
Notable contest results in recent years:
20/11/11 - Northern Open (Fourth Section) - 3rd place - conducted by Philip Mottershead.
10/3/13 - NW Regional Qualifying Contest (Fourth Section) - 1st - conducted by Philip Mottershead. [Due to changes in contest registration rules the Band elected not to accept the invitation to compete in the national finals in September 2013.]
9/3/14 - NW Regional Qualifying Contest (Third Section) - 2nd - conducted by Malcolm Peach.
7/6/14 - French Open Brass Band Championships (Third Section) - 1st - conducted by Malcolm Peach.
21/9/14 - National Championships (3rd Section Final) - 9th - conducted by Philip Mottershead.
25/10/14 - NW Association Brass Band Championships (Second Section) - conducted by Joshua Hughes.
4/6/16 - French Open Brass Band Chamionships (Third Section) - 2nd - conducted by Ewan Easton MBE.
Contesting really develops the ensemble playing within the band, and a good performance on the day excites both young and old.
One of the biggest challenges when contesting is meeting the cost of contest entrance fees together with the cost of travel to contests. Our next key contest is the NW Regional Qualifying Championships at Blackpool on Sunday 26 February, 2017 when the Band will be competing in the Third Section. Between July and then we plan to enter at least one other contest. Further details to follow.
Sponsorship is always welcome.
